About IAD

Instructor: Mr. Patrick McLane

In the Illustration and Design program you will build upon your skills as an artist and expand your knowledge of both traditional and digital illustration techniques. You will also explore the foundations of graphic design, color theory, composition, typography, art criticism, animation, and video game design. Industry standard design software including the Adobe Creative Suite are utilized throughout the curriculum. Students enrolled in Illustration and Design are eligible to receive AP credit upon completion of their program of study.

Illustration and Design offers students who are interested in traditional art a pathway toward post-secondary coursework and a career in the visual communications industry.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Illustration

The bulk of the IAD program centers around illustration. Students will be exposed to every facet of the illustration industry. Projects include children's book, fantasy, editorial, medical, and technical illustration. Both traditioal and digital illustration methods are utilized.

Graphic Design

Everything that we do as illustrators/designers revolves around the elements and principles of visual design. Students will study the fundamentals of these concepts as well as the importance of good typography, digital imaging, and color theory and practice.

Advanced Placement- 2-D Design

Seniors in the IAD program can register for AP 2-D Design. Those students will suppliment their required coursework with an independent exploration of techniques and projects. They will submit this work to the AP portfolio review for evaluation and college credit.

Animation

IAD students utilize 2 of Adobe's animation packages to create character animation. Adobe Animate allows students to realize cinema quality cartoons and anime. Adobe Character Animator brings characters to life through digital puppeting technology.

Video Game Design

The IAD curriculum includes an introduction to video game design. Students will explore standard computer gaming concepts and create sprites and animations for a traditional 2-D platformer style game.

Live Work/Community Service

Students will periodically create illustrations for non-profit companies, international organizations, and local businesses. Previous projects include children's books, sensory pathways for local school districts, marketing graphics, and various poster designs.

Dual Enrollment

Keystone College

Students enrolled in IAD at the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County have the opportunity to earn 9 college credits from Keystone College upon successful completion of their program.

Articulation Agreement

Kings College

Upon graduation students interested in continuing their education at King's College are eligible to receive 9 college credits based on their performance at CTC.
